In partnership with the IT Consultancy Company DS-Dexterre, Waterfall Routes Inc has deployed its first field team.  Each day they select a neighbourhood in Accra, Ghana and pop in on local businesses to present Waterfall Routes.  The field team helps them download the free app and register; they then set up the business’s location profile.  It’s a lot of work, especially when they visit a neighbourhood for the first time, as no routing landmarks have yet been established!

Waterfall Routes is a free app available in the Google Play Store (you can download it here).  It is a new addressing tool that allows you to create a location profile (business or residence) that can be shared as a link or a QR code.  With that information, businesses can easily identify their location, something that is typically difficult in the sprawling cities of Africa.

Most African cities don’t in fact, have functional addressing systems.  To date, this has been viewed as yet another development challenge in Africa, despite hundreds of millions of dollars in investment.  However, street addressing, with its European origin connected to taxation and individual land ownership, might be a bad fit on a continent where almost all land is collectively owned by governments and tribal communities.  Waterfall Routes offers a new model: your address is where you are, and if your business moves, all you change is your location profile information.  Your link and QR code don’t need updating at all!
